Team Building Games

On Friday I ran some team building games with the new stucent councillors. My first job was to pick up the lunches from Bay Organics and bring them down with me to Yallingup but when I got there and asked for the order for the high school the manager gave me a blank look that sent a nasty signal to my brain! The feeling became reality when he said they didn't have our order and he didn't know anything about it! At this point I'd like to point out that I was just the courier, someone else had ordered the food. With no time to wait I left and as I drove off hit the phone to my trusty sidekick and number one go-to person in times of trouble, my faithful wife. She wasn't home, then her mobile went to message bank. This was not looking good. But moments later she sent a text, giving her best Lurch impression via sms, "You Rang". I called her back and asked her to find somewhere in Dunsborough that could make up lunches for 25 people as quickly as possible and ring through the order for me to pick up on my way to Yallingup.
No problem.
She rang back a few minutes later to say that Subway in Dunsborough were on the job. Good news.
When I got to Dunsborough and walked into Subway the news wasn't quite so good, they hadn't started the order yet!
Urging haste I left them to it while I went to Coles and bought fruit juice (and cups), nectarines, grapes, cookies, Doritos and salsa, hoping that along with the Subway sandwiches which were only the 6" models, that would be enough to feed the hungry horde of student councillors anxiously awaiting my arrival. $18o later and with everything stowed on board I set off to find them.
The moment I appeared in the car park they jumped up and ran to the car: I've got a feeling it was hunger motivating them and not any excitement at seeing me.
They tucked in as if they hadn't eaten in a week and expressed their thanks and gratitude numerous times.
The day was saved.
On to the games.

The Ancient Art of Bum Spelling

Two contestants are given a word which they then have to spell out to their team mates by "writing" each letter with their bum! ie. by moving their bum up and down and back and forth as if it is the nib of a pen. First team to guess the word wins.
Very funny game, great de-inhibitizer.

Triangle Tag

One person's "it", one person in the triangle is their target, the other two try to protect the target from getting caught. High energy, lots of fun.

Elephant Lion Hunter

The Odds Team showed superior strategising skills to totally kick the Even's butts at Elephant Lion Hunter, a modified team version of the traditionalschoolyard game of Scissors Paper Rock. (For those who who want to try this at home, Elephant beats Lion, Lion beats Hunter, Hunter beats Elephant)

Quadrapushups

The challenge was to have all four people do a push-up at the same time with no feet or knees touching the ground. Totally possible and totally fun trying!

Push Over

I went to Yallingup yesterday afternoon to run some team building games with the school councillors and house captains.
Pushover is one of my traditional starting games and is a guaranteed winner.

In Brief

I have very little to say tonight, and I've just said it.
Stayed up too late painting last night, got to go to bed now and try and catch up, especially with a taxi shift tomorrow night which will be a late one.
I did another painting tonight but no photos available yet. I'm in a very productive phase which is good, and Carolyn and others like them which is better, because Wilma and I are planning a joint exhibition in May so I need plenty of work to choose from for that.
Imagine that, me, Marcus, having an art exhibition!
Who said the age of miracles is past?!

Fitzy's Birthday

Valentine's Day will always carry a tinge of sadness because it is Brendan's birthday. Brendan would have turned 18 today but instead he is no longer here, killed by a suicide bomber in Bali 18 months ago. He was a good kid, in the wrong place at the wrong time. I rang Lisa his Mum tonight just to say I was thinking about her, and Brendan's sister Jessica, and wondering how they were going on what was probably a sad and difficult day. It was good to talk to her, even though there was nothing I could say or do to change anything.
I've been thinking a bit about Brendan's life and death the last week or so as the days led up to his birthday. It is an incredibly sad thing to lose a child or a teenager; it is so tragically premature when young people die.

Living in Busselton is great, it's a beautiful seaside town, quiet, peaceful, relaxing, a great place to be.
The world is messy, terrorism being just one major problem facing us.
Busselton seems so safe and removed from the mess, and yet, even here, we are not safe or immune.

It reminds me again to take the time to enjoy and value my life while I have it, I have no guarantees and no way of knowing how long my time on earth will be. Just got to make the most of every opportunity and live as faithfully as I can to the things I believe and the values I hold.

We miss you Fitzy.

Google Earth Summer

Just finished my latest painting. It's on a large canvas (100cm x150cm) and I used some impasto to create the texture first then used foam rollers to apply the paint. I went for earth colours and tones and it reminds me of aerial pictures of paddocks and fields (ala Google Earth!)

You know how it goes, it's a dirty job but ...

I spent the last two periods of the day on a bike ride with some year 10 kids, ending up at the beach for a quick swim, them not me. Very nice.

Kicking Some Serious Old Lady Scrabble Butt!

I went to the local scrabble group tonight for the first time, a group of older ladies who meet once a month for a night of scrabble. I was the only bloke there but they made me very welcome and there was plenty of friendly chat and laughter.
We played three games (There were 9 people so there were 4 games going on at any one time) and I won all three of mine! Funnily enough the ladies didn't seem that bothered or interested in the scores! They were just having a good time. Mind you so was I! They had pages of 2 letter, 3 letter, 4 letter words etc, Q words without a u etc that they had downloaded off the internet! Very helpful and they were all happy to use them, consult dictionaries etc.
I scored 426 in one game, twice using all 7 letters in a word to get the 50 point bonus!
I'm home and having a very strange dialogue with The Heir; on Skype. He's talking and his voice is coming out of my computer speakers but we don't have a mic or headset yet so my side of the discussion is all typed. Makes for a weird experience but it's good to hear his voice. Considering he's been in England for over a year he hasn't lost his accent at all.
I'll get a headset soon so we can do it voice to voice. Pretty cool being able to talk across the net for "free".

I went to Bunbury this morning to see the orthopaedic surgeon who has referred me for an MRI next week to see if that shows up what the problem is.
Then Carolyn sent me on a challenging mission, to buy her a bra on special at KMart! I spent 10 minutes looking around the absolute multitude of bras, in a myriad of shapes and colours and styles and fabrics, without success! Turns out the sale doesn't start till Thursday! But the assistant manager took pity on me and allowed me to put my name down for one when they come in!

Back to Busso in time to supervise the delivery of our Commonwealth Games fish sculpture from the freight company to The Hub, a youth mentoring project in Busso that thankfully has a a large shed, big enough to accommodate a 7 metre metal fish sculpture. It needs some work to repair and refit it, paint and mount it before it goes on display in public but it was the first time I've seen it without all it's bubble wrap and I was impressed and excited, it looks good and the work on it shouldn't be too hard. I started to get pretty amped up about the project again which is good cause it's been on the back burner for a few months.

Well, The Heir has deserted me to go for a walk with his mates, it's late, I wanted to paint for a little while before I go to bed, all of which means it's time to sign off from Holt Press.

Sunday

Church was good this morning, the speaker was a 23 year old surfie who has a heart to reach muslims in Indonesia and is well on the way to establishing a surf based mission there.
After church we cruised a couple of garage sales. I bought a painting table for $20. I don
t know how practical it will be but it may get me off the kitchen bench some of the time. Sport Boy invited Jack over for the afternoon and after lunch we went round to drop the art exhibition form off to Ron, and Carolyn found a few things she wanted to buy, a cane bed head and a set of shelves. I got a box of brass door knobs and key plates, more artistic ideas to work on.

The boys loved the Billy cart and tried to convince Ron to sell it but now hes keen to put it in the exhibition hes going to finish it off, and keep it.

We took the boys down to see the Grand Final of the Beach Volleyball competition being played in Busselton this weekend as part of the state series. The level of play was superb, especially in the windy conditions. It made our 4-a-side games on Wed. nights look pretty bad!

Some kids at the beach were teasing the seagulls by throwing them chips they had put inside a coke bottle, it was very funny watching this flock of scavengers all fighting over the unattainable prize, they kept pecking at the chips and not understanding why they could see them but not reach them.

I had a headache when we got home so I snoozed in the recliner while Carolyn took the boys to Meelup for the church gathering. Once Id recovered I pottered around working on some projects, Ive taken to hanging things around the back patio, mobiles, propellers, driftwood etc. Today I tried to create a marble way out of pvc pipe which a strung together with fishing line. It sort of works but not as well as Id hoped.

I completed two paintings today, one Im undecided about, Ive changed the colours once already and I suspect Ill be doing so again because they dont match the frame very well. The second is a big one, based on another painting I did a while back which a friend likes. She was looking for something larger so I decided to oblige, and tried out using rollers instead of brushes. It worked fairly well but I need to keep practising to get a consistent application and appearance.

I was listening to England beat Australia in the cricket, a huge upset. After the absolute shellacking in the Ashes no-one forsaw this outcome. Ive been wanting some closer contests all Summer but this tested my feelings about competition V winning.

Saturday

By the time I got up today (after last night's cab shift) no-one was home. I read some emails then went to get bread and the paper. An hour later Carolyn came home from her swim, with bread and the paper! Great minds...

She didn't sleep too well so went back to bed for a nap. Jordan came home from jetty jumping with his friend Michaelangelo and later asked if he could sleepover for the night. He looked harmless enough, and said he thought the paintings on the wall were cool (before he knew I'd painted them) so I said yes. Sport Boy spent the day playing at Sam's place, only reappearing at dinner time! He had a great day playing soccer and cricket, and Sam's mum told me his manners were wonderful. Sam's Dad Ali and I play footy together and they live a couple of streets away.

I gritted my teeth and decided to clean out the fridge this afternoon! It was a voyage of discovery, use-by-dates, mould and unpleasant aromas! Once completed there was room to put things and almost everything left in the fridge is edible.

I went and picked up my x-rays from the hospital. The latest diagnosis is that there are three small cracks and chipped bones in my foot but none of them equate to the type of pain and swelling I'm experiencing. A cast was seen as unnecessary, instead I was given a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon and have an appointment in Bunbury on Tuesday morning to get it checked out. Not sure if it's all good news or not, certainly I'm glad not to have my foot in plaster for the next two weeks, but if it requires surgery to fix the ligaments I smell large medical bills!
The bottom line is I really want to be able to play sport again, volleyball at the least and preferably football as well so treatment is required.

On the way home I called into a garage sale and met a really great bloke called Ron and we ended up talking for over half an hour, about his plans to move his house from the front to the back of his block, sheds, art projects, making things etc. I told him about an upcoming art exhibition at the Courthouse Gallery with the theme of Blokes and Blokeyness which is inviting submissions of art for blokes, the sorts of things made in back sheds. He showed me a billy-cart he made which started out as an office chair, it was fantastic, and I urged him to enter it in the exhibition. You know what it's like when you hit it off with someone and you talk and laugh and really enjoy their company from the first time you meet them? That's what it felt like meeting Ron. I'm going to drop the rego forms off to him tomorrow, and I'll take the camera to get a couple of pics of Ron and the Billy Cart.
He gave me some weather beaten jarrah fence posts which I'm hoping to make frames out of, as well as some round metal disks that I have an idea for. I bought a box of guages at another garage sale this morning and hope to put bits and pieces together to make another "blokey" piece of art to accompany my "This used to be a microwave" sculpture for the exhibition.

Frankly Speaking

Harriet and Frank, recovered sufficiently to make the trek out to the end of the Jetty and back, and to embark on the next leg of their journey, to Margaret River. Harriet sms'd tonight to say all is well.

Frank No. 2: Frank Woods, a guest speaker I've had at the school the last two days. Frank works in Cambodia with a ministry called Hagar International who rescue street mothers from poverty, abuse, violence, prostitution and sex slavery.

I was going to bed but then...

I was just going to blog for a minute before bed but discovered The Heir on Skype asking questions and needing me to fax him things.
I've found what he needs and will send them tomorrow.
A mate posted a message about Skype that will definitely interest any of you who are Skype users. Here it is:

[9:41:47 AM] Phil Sparrow says: Dear all. Just to let you know: Skype can detect that you have unused bandwidth on your computer, and, being a P2P program, start using your computer as a 'Super-node'. This just happened to us. Hundred's of MB of data started being routed through our account, rapidly exceeding our quotas. The solution is to go to Skype/ Tools/ Option/ Connection, and uncheck the 'use port 80 and 443'. Skype is still a great program, but super-noding is a great hassle. Google 'Skype bandwidth use' if you want more info.

Sneaky little rats!!

Went to Bunbury with Sophie this afternoon, she drove, so I could check out FoodBank, a food distribution service which we're going to utilise for The Big Brekky this year. We hung around Bunbury, shopping etc until 9 when we went to the movies to see Blood Diamond. It was very violent and pretty heavy but also an excellent film on a serious subject.

Started the day at the physio whose diagnosis of the continued swelling and pain in my ankle (injured in September) is due to a hairline fracture, and that I need to get my foot put back in a cast for two weeks!! That's a nuisance but hopefully if he's right it will mean it will properly heal and I'll regain mobility without pain, and be able to resume playing sport.
So I'm off to see the Dr in the morning and I'll be back on crutches for two weeks!!

Harriet and Frank

I mentioned Harriet, a lady I met at the jetty beach on Monday evening. On Tuesday morning she arrived at our place with the news that her husband Frank was ill and had collapsed. He had managed to get himself back into bed but she was understandably worried about him and as we were the only people she knew in Busselton, she came round for a bit of support. The main concern was the lack of a mobile phone if they needed to call an ambulance or seek other assistance. They had brought a phone with them from England but it hadn't been "unlocked" and was thus unable to be used. Fortunately I had a spare mobile phone that I bought for the Yr 11 camp in December so we were able to give her a phone. I prayed for her and especially for Frank then she went back to the hotel to keep an eye on him.

This morning Harriet appeared again, this time with Frank. He had recovered significantly and was up and feeling a lot better. They were on their way to the jetty to go and look at the underwater observatory then were heading for Margaret River to stay for a couple of days.

We were both relieved to see Frank in better health. We chatted for a while, swapped addresses and emails and they asked if they could buy the phone of us so that they have a way to communicate for the remainder of their trip.

It was a chance meeting over a painting and some Chinese takeaway which had real benefits. It was good to be able to offer some hospitality and support to strangers, something God says in the Bible is important and close to his heart.

Harriet and Frank expressed a desire to meet The Heir upon their return to England in a few weeks, especially as they don't live too far away from where he is living and working.

Blogging for cheats

Not much time to blog tonight, I'm trying to get to bed early cause I've been too tired from pushing it too much lately. This is a transcript of part of the conversation I'm currently having with The Heir on MSN. He's signing himself "Procrastinating" I'm using Jordan's log on with the reference to the Nintendo 64. Hopefully you can follow it.

Carolyn and I went to see The Pursuit of Happyness tonight, good movie, Will Smith does an excellent job, as does the little boy who plays his son, who just happens to be his son.

anyone who didnt have a N64 when they were a kid or at any stage in their life is uncool says:
dad wants to talk to you
Procrastinating says:

What are you doing with the church? Be good to be earning some money, haven't spoken to Centrelink yet, will try tomorrow
Procrastinating says:

anyone who didnt have a N64 when they were a kid or at any stage in their life is uncool says:
What are you doing with the church?
Procrastinating says:
umm, doing drop in nite friday, going to birmingham with their youth this weekend, that kind of thing
anyone who didnt have a N64 when they were a kid or at any stage in their life is uncool says:
Better practice your accent
anyone who didnt have a N64 when they were a kid or at any stage in their life is uncool says:
Have you seen Harriet on my blog?
anyone who didnt have a N64 when they were a kid or at any stage in their life is uncool says:
She's from Northampton which is on the way to Birmingham. I bought a pink tie there once.

And so it goes on, the sort of international chit chat made possible by the wonders of the world wide web. The Heir has just signed off cause he's on radio in Oxford soon, whatever that means? He used to do a radio show in Poatina, I guess Fusion must have something happening in the UK.
But it's 11.15 and I NEED to go to bed.

Sports Update (This is where you stop reading Phil! Bye)

Indinapolis won the Superbowl.

On a depressing note, Tottenham lost 4-0 to Manchester Utd!

Sport Boy on Duty

I took Sport Boy down to the Monday night beach volleyball so he could put himself up for hire as a ballboy in the 2-a-side comp. He did two games and got a booking for Wednesday night as well! He even got a write-up in the local paper this week describing his exploits as ball boy. He liked it but said to me, "The writer made it more dramatic than it really was, do writers do that a lot?"
Welcome to the real world kid, Truth in Journalism 101!

Something unusual happened this evening, the beach returned! Every week for the last several months the spot where Sport Boy uis standing has been practically the edge of the water line. (Busselton has lost a huge amount of beach front over the last few years, I'm sure it's the result of global warming!) But tonight the water was nearly 10 metres further out, and it can't be the tide because we play at the same time each week. I don't know the explanation but it was nice to have more beach than normal.
While SB earned money I sat at a bench and started work on a painting. At the bench next to me a lady was eating Chinese takeaway and we struck up a conversation.Harriet is out here on a month's holiday from England, the town of Northampton in fact. We talked about my picture and the problems I was having with it, and her trip and family and she told me about her 43 year old daughter who died of breast cancer 12 months ago. Then Sport Boy arrived, hungry, and Harriet shared some of her chicken with him and he told her about the blog and his love of sport. I gave her my card and invited them round for a cuppa or for dinner tomorrow night if they feel like it. She was interested to hear about what The Heir is doing in England and had even heard of Haddenham and Wheatley, the villages where he is working and studying.

I'm about to sit down and watch the edited telecast of the SuperBowl, having studiously avaoided all mention of it throughoput the day in order to watch it without knowing the result.
One of my pet hates is watching a game when I already know who's won.

Tidying the shed

I went to mow the grass this afternoon but when I went to get it out of the shed it was buried under several layers of boxes of assorted stuff, camping eqipment, gardening tools etc etc. The shed has been begging to be tidied up for weeks so this proved to be the catalyst to get stuck into it. It took several hours and also involved sorting out and tidying up the carport. Lots of things were relocated to new homes, and a few things went into the bin, not enough but at least they're a step closer! There is now actually room to walk in and have a half decent chance of finding what you're looking for. Tomorrow, the grass!

Meelup Picnic

Lots of people from church met down at Meelup Beach for a picnic tea this evening. It is a beautiful spot and daylight saving meant we had extra time to enjoy it. Half a dozen of us played Bocce amongst the trees then I cooked some snags and burgers for tea. I finished by hitting catches for Sport Boy who enjoyed diving around on the sand, and made a number of great catches.

Saturday

Slept till lunchtime, my usual post Taxi driving pattern. Went down town and while there looked at an exhibition at a gallery and thought about painting techniques, checked out a garage sale which turned out to be at a house belonging to a mate of mine, Alan, a teacher, and which used to belong to local mp and shadow treasurer Troy Buswell. Bought a frame and a miniature basketball hoop. Browsed through the 2nd hand shop, bought a puzzle toy. Found some metal brackets at the Salvage shop which I needed to fix the crate and carry baskets on my bike and Carolyn's, a job I've just completed, in order to make junk mail delivery easier. Jordan has decided to quit the junk mail round but Carolyn and I decided to retain it as it's our neighbourhood and the money and exercise will both be useful. Came home, read the paper, dozed in the lounge chair, then rounded up 80% of the family and went down to the beach and had takeaways for dinner. It was what we in the taxi business call a milk run, Red Rooster for Jordan, McDonalds for Sport Boy, and fish and chips for Carolyn and I, which we ate down by the jetty, overlooking the scene of tomorrow morning's Jetty Swim, an annual event in Busselton.
Ran into Keith who in turn had run into an old mate from their days in the air force together who told a very interesting story about his conversion to Christ which included spells living at Amberley Queensland, down the road from Rosewood, a town I lived in for a couple of years as a teenager with Dad and Julie, and Sale Victoria, a place I also lived in for 6 months when Carolyn, the Heir and I went to Kilmany Park to do a 6 month course with Fusion; a hobo walking along a road who he drove back 5 miles to give $50 to; and a Gideon's Bible which despite several opportunities to do so he couldn't bring himself to throw away.

FFFFRIDAY Night in the CCCCAB

I've just gotten home from my Friday night shift in the taxi, the earliest finish I've had in a long time; it was very quiet and I was rostered No. 1 to "Park it up". I'm not complaining, I've been pushing it a bit lately and was pretty tired today. It was a reasonable shift monetarily because of a couple of generous tips too.
The only down side was the constant barrage of swearing, abuse, obnoxious behaviour and totally disrespectful attitudes shown by the various young men toward women, either those they saw as we drove past, or those they referred to in their "conversations". I'm not against sex, it's great, but the total sexualisation of women by these men is dehumanising, crude and ugly. The way they speak and act suggests they think they need but snap their fingers and women will flock to them in order to be used and abused. One group actually discussed a bet or prize for whoever got the first root. If the mysoginism abated for a brief time it was replaced by an endless stream of swear words, and not the "socially acceptable" ones that tend to start with "B", but the full blown ones starting with "F" and "C". There is no regard and no restraint and virtually no respect. I may as well not be there for all the notice they take of me. Again, I'm not a wowser, sure I try not to swear but I do let slip occasionally, but this is not swearing in context, this is swearing as a means of communication. Honestly, if I had a swear jar in the cab I could have financed the greater part of my long service leave trip on the proceeds of tonight's expletives and profanity. People seem to swear so readily now that it has lost meaning to them, they don't even notice, let alone consider that anyone else may find it offensive.
I don't know what prompted it tonight but it was rife and by the end of the shift I was ready to go home, and blog!
I'm not working Saturday nights this month so I should get sufficient sleep, and may even manage to make it to church on Sunday morning.
Tomorrow I paint!!!

PS My Dad sent me the taxi pic. He's good to me. The worrying thing is how closely this picture resembles my driving!!

4 Squares

The production line in the Holt Press Art Studio is really cranking out the paintings at the moment! I have to discipline myself not to do more than one a night! This one took three days of prep, building up layers of silver paint for the outlines. I added the colours using a small roller, the first time I've tried this technique, and I'm pleased with it, it gives an interesting texture and even finish. Carolyn wants to keep this one, saying that it goes with our decor, but like nearly all my pictures, it is for sale! Price $350.
I'm taking long service leave in 3rd term this year so I'm hoping to raise as much money as I can in order to be able to take a trip somewhere. That's the plan anyway! I'm pleased with the way this one looks. It's on a 30" x 30" canvas.

4 Squares

A second perspective of this one because I couldn't make up my mind which picture to post and they both show off different elements of the painting.

The Kids Have Returned

While I've been back at work for a couple of days, the real start of school was today, with 1000 odd students arriving at Busso High School to begin the new school year. That's not fair really, they're not all odd, just the year 9's mainly. I'm really hoping that the particular group of girls who buzz back and past my office every recess and lunchtime acting out their own version of Home and Away will grow up soon and leave the gossipy/bitchy soap opera behaviour behind! Mind you, by recess today the signs were not good!
More prayer required!
I continued the cleaning up/sorting out/decorating process today in my office, hanging a few paintings and photos, sorting out toys and puzzles, disposing of rubbish and creating a useable space. The new air con is sensational, worth every cent.

Tonight was beach volleyball with Carolyn making her comeback after returning from Melbourne. She did well but we still lost to the boys from The Goose who are all ex-school kids who played volleyball at Country Week and won the A Grade! Sport Boy seemed to be stuck in 2nd gear tonight in his ball boy duties and didn't even hang around for the third game to maximise his earnings, the first day back at school must have tired him out!

I went to see Deja Vu tonight.

I went to see Deja Vu tonight.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that; you could probably see it coming!

It was OK except for a dodgy ending which didn't remain true to the plot line in my opinion, Jordan disagreed when I told him what I thought later, trying to convince me with the sort of argument that might cut it with a 15 year old boy but was not good enough for me.

I also hung a stained glass window in the patio that we bought at a garage sale on the weekend, it looks good and will catch the afternoon sun nicely. I also repaired and hung a mobile wind chime I made out of old silver forks a while back. I'm not much use in the garden but I can add a few artistic touches to the decor!
